When my husband and I started our lives together, I started to embrace the world of cooking. Not to meet the domestic diva stereotype, but more because we both love food. Now that we have our own place, our own kitchen, and cupboards full of utensils (they were not full to begin with, but now they are. Overwhelmingly full for such a small kitchen. Too much compulsive buying.), I thought why not cook then?
My husband and I came from less adventurous families food-wise. My mother still cannot enjoy sushi and is put off by the idea of eating raw fish with rice. None of my in-laws like the bitter-yet-exotic papaya (paw paw) bloom cooked super hot and spicy (which means, when we dine out and I order this papaya dish, only my husband and I get to eat it!).
Despite the families' tendency to stick to familiar food, my husband and I found common interest in food adventure back in the days when we're still dating. We love trying new food outside of our comfort zone (aka Asian food), from waroong style, to fancy restaurants (special occasions only). However, our Asian heritage - especially our Indonesian root, does influence our love for spices, strong flavors, and 'unique material' (or part of animal body - let me just be straight forward). This influence inspires most of my dishes, and are the ones I cook most days.
We also found that real waroong (not high-end food place trying to be down-to-earth adopting the name 'warung' yet with fancy tents and tables and outrageous price) sells authentic, local food. Nothing beats years of experience, recipes pass down over generations, and fresh, local produce.
This blog is my food diary, to capture the food we love and enjoy as a family (well, I do have to cook something else for the little ones when I want to go crazy with the amount of chili and spices in the dishes). So, welcome to my waroong!
